The Self

Statement

To represent the Self in the social and inner environments, I used a repurposed frame window with a background made of cardboard, Japanese paper, acrylics, and crystal balls. The window symbolizes the soul’s reflection, while the crystal balls represent the multiple realities we encounter.

Works:

1- Video. “Should I go?” I created a video with a repurposed wood window frame and glass balls. In the first part, the gloved hands manipulate the crystal balls. In the second part of the video, the crystal balls interact with themselves. The window frame is invisible to disappear the notion of space. The original sound of the rolling balls, and the natural light, spontaneously form shadows amplifying the power dynamics in contemporary societies and the concepts of the flock.

2 – Performance collaboration, “Taking Care of You.” I present a recorded performance, interacting with the window. The performer, Sonia Baez-Hernandez, stands, doing slow body movements to make the balls move. This act’s intention reinforces the power dynamics in society. I created the concept, the film, and the video edition.

3 – Collages Installation, “Inside Out Stories.” The window frame is the point of departure to tell my stories. I used multiple materials for this project, such as paper, wood, glass, fabric, threads, painting, and acrylic mediums, to obtain various textures that reinforce the tactile experience. The pieces are placed in the middle of the room to make it possible for the viewer to look at the two sides of each collage piece. This piece represents the Self and its emotions as an internal environment throughout life experiences.

4 – Intuitive writing, ‘The Gaze”. I included this intuitive writing as part of my working process. It is not part of the final installation. I wrote it in Spanish and translated it with Google Translator without further editing.

“The Gaze”

English version

Through the window, I feel the wind caressing the leaves of the distant trees waiting to be born.

I listen to the distant whisper of my most intimate thoughts, savoring the bittersweet threads they leave behind.

I can smell the wet stones in charge of retaining each imagined moment I keep without resistance in the corner of my gut.

The time stops.

That window is the reflection of my soul. I don’t need my eyes to feel its gaze.
